S.P. Jayakar

Born in Tamil Nadu, India, S.P. Jayakar, the fourth child of a draughtsman, received a First Class diploma in Fine Arts in 1951.

Following college Jayakar was forced into teaching due to financial constraints. He moved on to a position with the government before a critical turning point came into his life in 1966. It was then Jayakar began associating with a group of artists in Madras. Here is where he met and fell under the influence of K.C.S. Paniker - the prime visionary behind the Cholamandal Artist Village. Jayakar joined this charmed circle of committed artists striving to establish a commune outside the city for creative people to live and work in peace.

Jayakar subsequently created the unique, ’40 Artists of Madras’, organised by The British Council in Chennai and has been involved in many other endeavours to share his learnings.

This multi-award winning artist has works on display in the New Delhi Art Museum, Madras Art Museum and in the Lalit Kala Academy in Delhi and Madras.
