D*Face

English multimedia street artist D*Face, a.k.a. Dean Stockton, developed his interest in graffiti during his childhood on the streets of London. The skate-boarding and punk street scenes were a strong influence, as was Henry Chalfant’s coverage of New York subway graffiti in Spraycan Art and Subway Art.

He uses spray paint, stickers, posters and stencil mediums to produce work where he encourages the public not just to ‘see’ but to ‘look’ at their surroundings and their lives. His work is known to be subversive and he challenges the viewers expectations by taking iconic images and adding his own creations to them. Society’s fixation with fame and celebrity are often portrayed in the symbolism of D*Face’s art.

D*Face completed a degree in Illustration and Design before working in a creative agency for a short time. Disillusioned with the commercial aspects of the work, D*Face pursued his artistic ambitions.

Aside from his significant street work, D*Face also paints on canvas and is well known for the clean and clear look he achieves through screen printing.

D*Face’s credentials are many and varied. He was one of 50 artists commissioned to create a 50th anniversary Penguin book cover. In 2010, he collaborated with Christina Aguilera on her album cover of Bionic, where Aguilera’s face appears as half herself and half mechanical. He has also participated in numerous exhibitions and continues to (illegally) put his mark on the streets in order to share his art with the public.
