For over a century, advertising and popular culture have celebrated women for their beauty, charm and sex appeal. From vintage commercial illustrations to the bold imagery of 1980s and 90s pop art, the female figure has been a powerful presence in the visual world.
With "Something else", Anthea Missy revisits that tradition while questioning the contradictions surrounding femininity today. Why should a woman be criticised for using her beauty and allure to her advantage? And why should strength or equality require her to compete with men on masculine terms?
Actress Sydney Sweeney illustrates this contradiction. By posing for an advertising campaign for a sports betting company in which she is also a shareholder, she combines the visual conventions of the past with a contemporary form of power and independence.
The cheeky declaration, “I ain't got balls!”, turns a familiar expression on its head. For Anthea, a woman doesn't need to imitate men to demonstrate courage, confidence or independence. She has something else.
There's another twist. Anthea questions whether the same image, created by a male artist, would be judged differently. By embracing the visual language of vintage pin-ups herself, she challenges the assumptions we make about who gets to celebrate female beauty and express desire.
