Arty-Fact: Yogi is known for his sense of humour and sound technical painting ability. Using his grandfather Singodimedjo for inspiration, the artist created his “Grandfather Series” which exhibited in Singapore’s National Library in 2009. Aptly named “Kena Loe!”, the exhibition examined social issues facing Indonesian youth.
This is an old man in his 90’s. He has lived through the Second World War, Indonesian Independence from the Dutch under Sukarno, the communist insurgency in Indonesia, the overthrow of Sukarno and Suharto’s ascendency. One way or another, this man has chosen to smile and find the enjoyment in life even when faced with adversity.
In a day and age when socio-political issues challenge our way of life, perhaps it's best to approach everything with a smile.
