Alternative Facts Addictees!
We couldn't decide between "he's baaa-ack" (ala Poltergeist) or "it's Billy bitch!" (we’re not being rude, we’re just channeling our inner Britney) to introduce one of Addicted's favourite Singapore-based Canadians - Billy Ma of Booda Brand fame. Actually, we only know two, the other is Mrs Booda Brand and we love her just as equally.
You’ll know Booda Brand for its beautiful fine art prints which have been a favourite with Addictees around the world. Billy's Socio-Politicking series has tackled subjects including human trafficking, gender equality and even deforestation amongst others.
In an era of sensational politics, extreme figureheads and hyper-responsive global communication, conditions are ripe for satirising leaders, candidates and government decisions. Artists are able to join in and respond to political argument as they are happening, almost in real time (to learn more about how art and politics have merged click here).
Against this backdrop, our Canadian friend is adding a new print to the Socio-Politicking stable and the result is “Statue of Bigotry”.
"Statue of Bigotry" is a critique of the current state of affairs in the US. When this presidency is all said and done, you'll look at this piece and remember poignant moments such as chocolate cake, "We had the most beautiful piece of cake that you'd ever seen"; Environmental policy (2015 interview), "I believe in clean air. Immaculate air.... But I don't believe in climate change."; And Melania's ninja snap-flick-slap away of POTUS's hands. All good things!
Before we introduce you to the new work, Billy's got wordzzz.
Arty-Fact
"I am often asked, as an artist, what motivates my art? Where do I get my ideas? And most often, do I ever run out of ideas?
It’s an unequivocal NEVER.
Artists are barometers of the world around them. The art itself is an interpretation of that time.
Italian Renaissance art represented the pinnacle of Italian society at that time. The art attested to the enlightenment of all facets of everyday life during that era. Without the marvelous artworks, how would we be able to fully experience the spirit of the renaissance?
Fast forward to Picasso’s Guernica, or today’s torch bearers Ai Wei Wei and Banksy, and you’ll see artists responding to the socio-political discord in real time.
For Booda Brand, it’s a privilege to bring to you an image to capture this extraordinary time in our history. Art is truth.
For the collector, it is an opportunity to express your convictions and own a piece of history."
