Alvin Tan, Melvin Chee, Jackson Tan and William Chan make up PHUNK, a Singapore based contemporary art and design collective.
Born in 1994, when its members were students at LASALLE College of the Arts, PHUNK studio has been described as "The Champion of Singapores Graphic Scene" (Creative Review, UK).
PHUNK's distinctive portfolio of work blends traditional Chinese craft and folklore, Hong Kongs wuxia fiction, Japanese manga and otaku subculture with Western popular culture.
PHUNK likes to blur the line between the traditional distinctions of artists and commercial design studios, preferring to focus on new approaches to visual expressions. The group has worked on projects in the alternate worlds of art, design, publishing, fashion, music, film and interactive media.
PHUNK's collaborations include Nike, Nokia, MTV, Daimler Chrysler, Comme des Garcon, Levis, Tiger Beer and Salem. They have exhibited and lectured around the world including the London Design Festival in 2006.
The collaborative was also awarded "Designer of the Year" in 2007 by the President's Design Award, the highest accolade for designers in Singapore.
In 2010 PHUNK collaborated with celebrated artist Keiichi Tanaami from Japan. This project integrated each of their motifs and characters onto the space of the other. The work unites each artists' alternative messages into a visual feast.
"IN THE EMPIRE OF DREAMS, YOU ARE THE KING OF ITS DESTINY."
