Emerging from China's Cultural Revolution, Jiang Li, a painter of the Yunnan School, is part of the second wave of Yunnan artists.
Jiang, who studied under Ting Shao Kuang (one of the founders of the Yunnan School), paints images which are inspired by his heritage and show the jubilation of the human spirit.
Beginning his career as a graphic designer and artist with a book publishing company, Jiang won a national prize for his work in 1985. His work was noticed by the East West Gallery in Chicago and he was invited to exhibit there shortly after.
Jiang's work is a blend of influences from the East and the West, the old and the new, creating a rich visual tapestry that combines the traditions of Asia with contemporary expression. Chinese culture features strongly in neolithic images, bronze age designs and the philosophy of Taoism. The exotic aspects of the Yunnan Province also feature heavily in Jiang's work.
Seeking artistic freedom, Jiang moved to the United States in 1989. Today he lives and works in Los Angeles, California.
Jiang Li's original works have been published and reproduced in various media including books, serigraphs, posters, woodblock, ceramic and bronze. His work is exhibited in galleries throughout the United States, Canada, South America and Asia.
