G. Raman was born in Chennai and remains in the very same house where he lived as a child. For the past four decades Raman has used the house as an artist studio as well as his home.
Raman has received dozens of awards, both local and international. He is an Alumni of the Government College of Arts & Crafts, Chennai, and has received the Regional Lalit Kala Academy Scholarship & Senior Fellowship from the Government of India (1992-93).
An accomplished artist, Raman has an affinity for details and colourful figures. Much of his work refers back to the design of traditional Indian art. Hindu mythology has also featured strongly in his work. He has an interest in Christian imagery and his works include several depictions of Christ.
G. Raman uses colour to enhance the significance of his line work and this feature is what sets him apart from other South Indian artists.
His works can be found in private collections worldwide. He has received awards and honours from the Bombay Art Society, the Mysore Pradesh Kala Parishad in Bangalore and the Intermediate Christian Art Competition, New York.
Raman has held four solo exhibitions in Chennai. His works are part of the collections of the Birla Academy of Arts in Calcutta, the National Gallery of Modern Art in New Delhi and the Hyderabad Museum.
