Born in Gudiyattam, in the Indian State of Tamil Nadu, Selvaraj was destined for life as an engineer.
The universe had other plans in mind when his love of classical Indian dance led to the discovery of a world where he was able to also express himself through the visual arts including painting. Secretly forgoing his study of engineering, Selvaraj threw himself with passion into his real love of drawing and painting.
The sensuousness of dance influences his painting and his work seems to flow onto the canvas like a fluid stretch of moving water, spilling into a giant waterfall of colour and life.
In 1966 he became a life member of the internationally recognised Cholamandal Artists Village located in Chennai.
He is also the recipient of The Progressive Painters Association Award. The association is one of the oldest art organisations in India.
